Shift to PNG or lose LPG, says Centre
Shift to PNG or lose LPG, says Centre

New Delhi: The government has mandated discontinuation of LPG supply to households that fail to switch to piped natural gas (PNG) where such connectivity is available, as part of efforts to boost gas infrastructure and manage supply disruptions.
Under the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, notified by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, LPG supply to a household will cease three months after being informed to opt for PNG.
The move comes amid LPG shortages triggered by the ongoing West Asia crisis, which has disrupted supplies from key producing regions.
The order seeks to promote fuel diversification and free up LPG for areas without pipeline access. However, households will continue to receive LPG if the authorised entity certifies that PNG connectivity is technically infeasible.
Such cases will require a no-objection certificate (NOC), which may be withdrawn once connectivity becomes viable. To accelerate PNG rollout, the government has eased approvals and mandated time-bound permissions.
